Ivory statue of Saint Christopher, Southern Netherlands 17th century
A beautiful carved ivory statue depicting Saint Christopher, leaning on his staff and carrying the Christ child on his shoulder across a river before the child revealed himself as Christ. Therefore, he is the patron saint of travelers and the size of this statue probably indicates that it was carried around by a traveler for personal devotion and protection.
The statue is mounted on its original turned and black stained wooden base.
