Hercules between Vice and Virtue - Entourage of Charles of the Pit (1636-1716)

This episode of the life of Hercules young man is taken from a philosophical discourse of Greek antiquity.
The demi-god whose posture indicates doubt, now the chin and lost gaze, must choose between the vice incarnated by Venus and virtue incarnated not Minerva.
On the easy slope of pleasures, voluptuousness of the flesh, drunkenness, vanity of music and mask, the hero will prefer the voice of virtue, the guarantee of his eternal glory.
Minerva, wearing a helmet and holding a shield, refers to the temple of glory in the background, inspired by that of Vesta in Rome dedicated to him.
Charles of the pit offers us here a graceful version of the subject, the work is part of the order of the dolphin for the big billiard room, from Château-Vieux to Meudon around 1700.

Charles de la Fosse:
Birth on June 15, 1636 in Paris, died on December 13, 1716 in Paris.
French painter considered by art historians as one of the most important French painters around 1700, whose style ensures the transition between the 17th and 18th century.
