Our animated landscape is an oil on panel 32 cm by 23 cm
Attributed to Pieter de Neyn (1597-1639)
Beautiful old blackened wooden frame and tortoiseshell decoration of 50 cm by 40 cm.
Pieter de Neyn (Leiden, 1597-1639)
Like Jan van Goyen He is a student of Esaias van de Velde.
It begins with scenes of battles but specializes very quickly in the landscape in a style close to Van Goyen leaving a prominent place in the sky. The comparison stops there. Neyn works the light differently, it is much more contrasted. The rather dark skies accentuate the trail of light thrown to the ground (examples in the museums of Mainz , Kassel, Cambridge [Fitzwilliam Museum], Munich [1633, Alte Pin.]).
We find perfectly this effect characterized by light in our table.
