A rare companion pair of banjo Barometer and Clock

A rare companion pair of banjo Barometer and Clock with green backed horn veneer 'Corne Verte' and gilt ormolu mounts, the barometer's white enamel face signed F Lesage, Paris. Both with their original red alcohol thermometers. With detailed and finely cast gilt bronze mounts of rococo S and C scrolls with pierced work and burnishing defining the outer edge of the pair. Inlaid brass further elevates this decoration.

The enamelled white barometer dial calibrated from 27? to 29? with further enamel panels set in the ormolu border with weather indications in French. Tempete, Pluvieux, Changeant, Beau-Temps and Tres-Sec. The lower panel marked Barometre Metallique. The barometer reading is indicated by a blued steel hand. The enamel dial is enclosed within a cast gilt bronze bezel and original convex glass.

The matching companion clock has an elaborate dial of gilt metalwork with King Louis XV in high relief amongst laurel leaves, classical dolphins and foliage, Roman numerals in individual hour markers and a similar chapter ring in Arabic numerals marking 5-minute intervals, time being indicated with blued steel hands. The gilt bronze and enamel dial is enclosed within a cast gilt bronze bezel and original convex glass.

An excellent example of a beautifully proportioned companion barometer & clock of the highest quality.
