Scholar stone, Lingbi , China late XIXth century

This particular scholar stone, Gongshi in Chinese, comes from Lingbi in the northern Anhui province of China. For Gonshi, Robert Mowry's book is a reference. Robert Mowry, World Within Worlds: The Richard Rosenbloom Collection of Chinese Scholars’ Rocks, Harvard University, June 1997. ‘Because of their density, Lingbi stones are naturally resonant,’ Mowry explains. ‘The best Lingbi stones are deep black in colour, often only lightly textured, their surfaces appear moist and glossy.’ This nice example has been mounted on a Shizhou style stand of more recent manufacture. 45 x 12 x 20 [...]
