Red coral amulet with a gold filigree mount. Southern Italy. 2nd half 17thC
A red coral amulet with its original high carat gold filigree-work mount in the shape of a crown, decorated with foliage.
The coral branch is an amulet that, traditionally, brings good luck. It is given especially to children for protection: in many paintings of the 1500’s you can see children wearing a small coral branch (see image included of a painting by Piero della Francesca). As a talisman it brings luck, because it is red like passion, blood and the sap of life and it is twisted, because life is not straight and comes with many difficulties.
