Red coral amulet with a gold filigree mount. Southern Italy. 2nd half 17thC

A red coral amulet with its original high carat gold filigree-work mount in the shape of a crown, decorated with foliage. The coral branch is an amulet that, traditionally, brings good luck. It is given especially to children for protection: in many paintings of the 1500’s you can see children wearing a small coral branch (see image included of a painting by Piero della Francesca). As a talisman it brings luck, because it is red like passion, blood and the sap of life and it is twisted, because life is not straight and comes with many difficulties. Southern Italy. 2nd half of the 17th century. [...]
