The Dancer, 1938
Watercolour on paper
Signed and dated lower right “C. Terechkovitch / 1938”
H. 63 cm. / L. 35.5 cm. (on view)

The work, mounted under “museum” glass, is presented in a modern Louis XVI style frame, hand-carved wood frame, gilded with fine gold, from the house R.G., Les Cadres Gault, Paris and Geneva

The theme of the dancer is one of the favorite subjects of the painter. Our work, dated 1938, may represent his wife Yvette who often serves as a model. If it is not, it is very probably a dancer from the Russian ballets of Monte-Carlo, founded in 1932, at the instigation of Louis II (1870-1949), Prince of Monaco, by the Colonel W. Basil (Vassili Grigorievich Voskressenski, known as; 1888-1951) and René Blum (1878-1943), brother of the French politician Léon Blum (1872-1950).

Great colorist, Terechkovich succeeds, in spite of a refined drawing and a limited chromaticism playing on the opposition between cold colors (gray, blue) and warm colors (yellow, orange and red), to translate the voluntary attitude of the dancer although at rest.
