Pury, Edmond de, Baron

Pierre Loti (1850-1923), in the habit of a naval officer, 1895
Oil on canvas
Signed, dated and located lower left “Ed de Pury 1895 / Rochefort / – sur Mer –”
Titled top right “Pierre Loti”
H. 64 cm. / L. 56 cm.
The work, cleaned and varnished, is presented in a modern Empire style frame, gilded with fine gold, decorated with palmettes, from the house R.G., Les Cadres Gault, Paris and Geneva; this frame is a reinterpretation of the original frame known by a period photograph (H. 80 cm. / L. 72 cm.)
Our painting is the one visible, at the centre, of a photograph representing “The Artist in his Venice studio”; it is reproduced in the artist’s monograph (Ritter, 1913, 9). This portrait is also reproduced in full page in the same work (op. cit., p. 83).
There is another version of this work, kept in Rochefort-sur-Mer (Charente-Maritime), in the house of Pierre Loti (Julien Viaud, known as; 1850-1923).
