The Bearing of the Cross / Saint Veronica, Mechelen, Gielis Neins

The Bearing of the Cross and the meeting with Saint Veronica.
Christ coming from the left fell to his knees under the weight of the cross. To avoid collapse, he holds his right hand on a stone while Saint Veronica, kneeling before him, is about to wipe his face. Behind Jesus, Simon of Cyrene tries to relieve him of his burden; two Roman soldiers also seize the wood of the cross to help the Lord rise. In the left background, the Virgin Mary and Saint John are present, looking desolate at the fall of Jesus; on the right two turbaned priests follow on horseback. In the background appears the city of Jerusalem and the hill of Calvary on the right.

Alabaster panel carved as bas relief with gilding highlights. Rich gilded wooden frame. Measures of the frame: height approx. 22,9 cm, width approx. 20,3 cm, depth approx. 3,5 cm.

Mechelen, early 17th century.
Mongrammed G*N for Gielis Neins (about 1609-1619)
