Marble Bust Vitellius Imperator XVIIe

The bust represents Aulus Vitellius Germanicus Augustus Imperator or Vitellius, the eighth Roman emperor.
Many portraits of Vitellius have survived despite his brief reign from April 19 to December 22, year 69: not only this emperor inspired several generations of artists but it is easily recognizable, thanks to these various busts.
In spite of antique eyes, this sculpture proves to be very expressive: the treatment of the flesh reveals the gluttony of Vitellius and the commissure of the lips reinforces the character of this face. This face exudes a certain gravity, perhaps an omen of the violent end of this emperor with a cruel reputation.
