View of Rome with Palazzo Pallavicini

Pencil on paper, cm. 40 x 61,5

This large drawing, measuring 400 x 615 mm. and coming directly from the artist's heirs, is an authentic and original work by Giovanni Battista Camuccini. The particularly deep and sweeping view stretches from Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi up to the Torre delle Milizie, which can be clearly made out on the right-hand edge of the composition together with the characteristic umbrella pine in the Giardini Colonna, one of the historic pine trees that stood out in stark isolation against the blue Roman sky here, on Monte Mario and in the Vicolo Sterrato. In anticipation of what we shall be seeing below, it is worth pointing out here that the artist deliberately left the entire foreground in an "unfinished" state. And finally, the choice of subject makes this drawing not only a rare graphic testimonial of Giovanni Battista Camuccini's art but also an important piece of the puzzle in the reconstruction of Rome's erstwhile topography.
