Shepherd with his Flock in the Roman Campagna

Oil on paper laid down on canvas, cm. 53 x 36,8

Literature: Pier Andrea De Rosa, Johann Jacob Frey, 1813 - 1865. Nine unpublished paintings. Rome, 2017, ed. Solari Grafiche, pag. 19

A Shepherd with his Flock in the Roman Campagna is almost a symptomatic summary, a signature piece revealing Frey's most intimate world. I would argue that it marks the high point of his nostalgic passion for the manifestations of nature. On the left, the skeletal trunk of a tree contrasts with the dominant, spreading vegetation, while full sunlight glares on the tufa rock (possibly the Alban volcano of old?) until it blazes. One's thoughts go instinctively to an oil on paper depicting Rocks of the Serpentara Forest in Olevano by Friedrich Nerly in the Angersmuseum in Erfurt and, albeit in a minor key, to the Rock Wall with Vegetation, another oil on paper, by Adolf Hoeninghaus in the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld.
