Diogene Running through Athens, Oil on Panel by Charles Eugène Lefebvre

Oil on mahogany panel representing Diogenes running through Athens, with a lantern lit in the middle of the day. He is told "I am looking for a man", which would imply that throughout the city, it would be difficult to find a worthy of the name (which corresponds well to the contempt that Diogenes of Sinope, the cynic, had for his contemporaries.) Signed lower right ch. Lefebvre. Charles Victor Eugène LEFEBVRE (1805-1882), history painter, pupil of Gros and Abel de Pujol, he started at the Salon in 1827, medal of 2nd class in 1833 1st class in 1845.3e class at the Expo Universal of 1855.
