A shipwrecked three-master in stormy seas - Late 18th Century

School of Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789)

oil on canvas
in an early 19th Century gilt frame

Our painting "The Shipwreck" would be a copy or replica of the "Shipwreck" of the Prague Gallery, painted by Joseph Vernet in 1772. In fact, between 1771 and 1773, the artist executed a series of 5 large paintings for a show of the Pavillon de Louveciennes, at the request of Madame du Barry. This sequel included "the four parts of the day" and a fifth painting depicting "a Port". "The Midi" probably represented "The Shipwreck" of Prague that resumes our painting.

A copy practically similar and same dimensions was sold on May 26, 1913, Galerie G. Petit, lot 30 (La Béraudière collection)
