Moorehead profile - Italy end of XVIIth century

This profile of Moorhead made in black marble, probably in " paragone marble" sets on a white marble ground, framed by an octagonal porphyry border, the whole completed by a giltwood regence frame.

The use of different colour marbles comes from the Antiquity. Colouring effects gives interesting contrasts. In Italy, this tradition is very active during the 17th century, particularly on the sculptures depicting Moors. This type of representation lends itself to the use of various sorts of marbles.
The treatment of hair is remarquable. They are carved very precisely in a succession of little locks. This type of carving can be found on moor busts attributed to Nicolas Cordier and Melchior Barthel.
