Oil on canvas

This elegant profile view is wearing a black bodice with puff sleeves adorned with a large lace collar, her jet black hair is covered with a black feather hat. In her right hand she holds a white rose. The pose is done in front of a wall with Japanese motifs, patterns found on the belt of a console on which is a vase of flowers.

Gustave Poetzsch (1870 -1950)
Of Swiss origin, Gustave Poetzsch comes to Paris in 1892 and frequents the studio of Gustave Moreau, where he meets Matisse and Camoin.
His wife, Marie-Louise Aulagne is a famous milliner from the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where all the elegant women of the time gather; this marriage puts him in touch with a clientele frequenting the most posh places of Paris as well as Deauville become a holiday resort for all Paris, where she opens a shop to receive her Parisian customers.
Gustave Poetzsch becomes an illustrator of the female costume of this time. In the early years of the twentieth century, the rigid bust corset refines the waist, rounds the hips, the bodice makes its appearance, it is trimmed with large lace collar, and hats adorned with ostrich feathers or peacock.
