Mythological Scene 'Reunion of Venus, Minerva and Apollo'

French school of the seventeenth century

oil on canvas
(cm.) 82 x 70
with frame 94 x 82

The painting we present is the work of an artist close to the French master Eustache Le Sueur (Paris, 1616 - 1655), one of the most important painters of France seventeenth century, considered among the founders of French classicism.

He began his career as a student of Simon Vouet, absorbing the richness and sensuality of the composition, combining classical elegance and harmony of composition, influenced by the Raffaello prints.

After a decade spent as a pupil, Le Sueur began an autonomous artistic journey, with the paintings of the Museum of the Muse at the Hotel Lambert in Paris. In this office, he painted a series of mythological and fascinating themes, which represent the triumph of Neptune.

Then, his career began with the sumptuous palaces of the Parisian private clientele, fascinated by his works.

Mythological scenes like this, characterized by the presence of a group of gods who converse comfortably suspended in the sky, have therefore had great success for the whole of the century.

There are many comparisons, both analytical and general, between these pleasant testimonies here examined, and various famous works by Eustache Le Sueur, preserved in numerous international museums, including:

- The birth of Love, Louvre, Paris
- Love commands Mercury to announce its power to the Universe, Louvre, Paris
- Venus presents Love to Jupiter, Louvre, Paris

In particular, our work shows the encounter between Venus with the little Cupid, Apollo with his lira and finally Minerva, represented with the typical symbols, spear, helmet and shield at the head of the Medusa.

The design is undoubtedly marked by the influence of Italy, in particular it is strongly felt by the art of the Roman period of Annibale Carracci (Galleria Farnese).

The canvas is in good condition.
Complete with a gilt wooden frame of the 19th century.

The painting, like all our object, is sold with a certificate of authenticity with photographic documentation.
