Historical Annecdote: The Phrygian cap is a cap originating in Anatolia. It is a symbol of freedom by its resemblance to the "pileus", a hat worn by freed slaves in the Roman Empire. In the United States it was also used as a symbol of freedom in the war of independence and it is still present on the flag of the state of New York.
