A Dutch Louis XVI Secretaire à abattant

A secrétaire in two parts on four tapered legs with bronze spherical feet. The lower part closes with two doors, the upper part closes with a lockable writing flap. The interior of the lower part has one shelf and one lockable drawer on one side. The interior of the upper part has three drawers on either side of a central open storage space. Over the drawers is a shelf that comprises the entire width and a layer of six pigeon holes. The diagonally placed jambs are decorated with veneered fluting.
The front of the secrétaire is richly decorated with Japanese lacquer panels encased in bronze beaded edges. The panels are framed with several contours of different veneers and gilt brass.
The frieze is decorated with three narrow panels of European lacquer.

The Japanese lacquer panels, that probably stem from another piece of Asian furniture, are decorated with leaf motifs and flowery sprigs in gold and silver lacquer. The panel on the writing flap shows some mountain scenery and trees and a shishi (Chinese guardian lion) on a kidney-shaped backdrop.
The lacquer panels are made in Makie-technique, where gold dust or foil is dropped onto the last, still wet, layer of lacquer. Next the surface is polished to a shine and covered with a coat of varnish. The transparent varnish is also polished after drying. Often, relief is added to the panels to enhance the effect of the gold decorations. This is done by adding lime to one or more of the lower layers of lacquer.
