Small "Cosmati" tile with cross pattée, Rome Early 13th century

A beautiful, small "Cosmati" tile, made of a thick rectangular white marble slab
which has an intricate geometric pattern with a cross "pattée" in the centre surrounded by a circle with three dots and four corners, inlaid in green "Greek" porphyry , red "Egyptian" porphyry, Siena marble and a variety of colorful hard stones .

The cross "pattée" is a type of early Christian cross, which has arms narrow at the center, and flared in a straight line shape, to be broader at the perimeter. The form appears very early in medieval art and was inspired by Byzantium.

Rome. Early 13th century.

Dimensions: width 24,5cm ; length 18,5cm ; thickness 5,8cm
