A pair of Louis XVI gilt bronze firedogs

A pair of chased gilt bronze fire-dogs decorated with a fire pot on a pedestal and with a relic.

France, Louis XVI period (1774-1790).

Our firedogs are similar to another pair kept in Museum of Decorative Art in Lyon identical to two other pairs delivered by bronzemaker Pitoin for the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne in 1767, one for the room of Madame Victoire à Saint-Hubert and another for the Compiègne palace (see Svend Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, 1974, pl. 224).
