Italian Equestrian Statue Representing Marcus Aurelius

A reduced copy of the famous equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. The four meters high original on the Capitol in Rome is the only equestrian statue of antiquity that has survived. For ages this statue has been mistaken for an image of the first Christian emperor Constantine. That is presumably the reason why it has been spared for posterity.

When Michelangelo redesigned the Capitol in 1538, he moved the statue to the centre of the square and put it on a self-designed pedestal. From the mid-16th century onwards, reduced copies of this sculpture were made as luxurious souvenirs.

This copy’s patina and chasing imply that it is manufactured in the 18th century. The white marble pedestal is original.
