Merrymaking on the ice

Hendrik Tavenier was born in Haarlem in 1734. He studied with Jan Augustini, who painted wallpaper decorations. In 1759 he joined the local guild of St Luke. He specialized in landscape drawings and prints and produced many topographical drawings and watercolors of North Holland landscapes. Examples of his work ware kept in many Dutch print rooms and museums.

The present work is a winter landscape, a genre that was very popular in Holland from the seventeenth century onwards – and still is today. It depicts several children playing on the ice, with a couple of bystanders and a horse-drawn sleigh approaching from the right. In the background the skyline of a town can be made out, but the exact whereabouts of this typically Dutch setting are unknown.
