Charles KVAPIL is a Belgian painter of the School of Czechoslovak Paris, origin, born in Antwerp November 1st, 1884, and died in Paris in 1958.
Charles Kvapil attended the class of the Academy of Arts of Antwerp. His first works were exposed in 1908, in the Show of Antwerp. In 1911, he exposed in Munich; these works showed then a clear Cubist influence. In 1914, he exposed again in Belgium, in the Three-year of Brussels.
He is mobilized during the World War I.
After the armistice, he lives in Paris, and install his studio in Montmartre, in the Hamlet of the Artists, between the street Lepic and the avenue Junot; it is there that he will die.
He leads a very blank existence, but he is provided with an optimistic temperament and he has the hope to drill; he has to work to survive and he paints especially the evening, especially during his first years in Paris.
In the Show of the Independents of 1920, Kvapil shows himself to the Parisian public.
He frequents the coffee of Parnasse and is exposed to it in a small group organized by In. Clergy, " the Company of the painters and the professional sculptors ", which shows itself in 1921. The foreword is drafted by Romoff. One second follows by few. She includes 102 participants, among whom Friesz, Lagar, Ortiz de Zorate, Scouëzec, Astoy, Roysen, Loutreuil, Krémègne, Gallien, Gontcharova, Lebedeff, Ramey, Kvapil. This one remains attached to the folklore of the bohemian painter whose ground of exploits and the model Montparnasse is of life.
In 1923, his works are hung on at Marcel's Bernheim's, then at Dalpeyrat, in Limoges, where he shows especially landscapes. Afterward, he participates in the Autumn show; he exposed in his/her lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, in Italy, in Stockholm, in London and New York.
He is represented in numerous public and private collections, including to the Museum of Modern Art of Paris, in the museums of Havre, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis today.
Charles Kvapil is known especially as painter of characters, in particular for his representations of nudes; he painted models in studio, sometimes in front of his window with the mound Montmartre at the background; often also swimmers or feminine nudes placed in groups of characters, like Courbet and impressionists at their beginning.
We owe him so many portraits; but he did not disdain either still lives, in particular bunches of flowers, nor landscapes, which form an important part of its work.
He painted numerous regions, of which the Corrèze, where he " knew how to seize the character of the country which is not his, with its usual control ", the Mediterranean Coast, Corsica, where he stays regularly during 1920s and 1930; in Paris he participates in exhibitions of the painters of Corsica in 1925 and 1933. In 1939, in a new exhibition of Art Corsica, in the Gallery The Team, always in Paris, he presents two titled paintings " Costa brugiata, Cape Corsica "and" View of Rogliano ".
Charles Kvapil was influenced by the fauvism and by the very moderate cubism; Paul Cézanne and, to a certain extent Matisse (as colorer), also marked his style.
Charles Kvapil's paintings are original and modern, his nudes and his bunches of flowers are strong and powerful.
His pallet is rich in cobalt blue and in warm colors. His technique is voluntary and powerful. His works in the oil are often of modest size, painted sometimes on panels, or on cardboard. He also practised with a beautiful control the technique of the pastel. It was a tireless worker and we bring back of him these subject: it is necessary " that the painter speaks little, but that he combs a lot "
