Augsburg, Germany, circa 1500
Limewood hollowed out at the back, on a later socle
The almond shaped eyes and tight curls to the hair are reminiscent of the work of gregor Erhart, the son of michael, first documented as resident of ausburg in 1494. originally from a full length figure of a Calvary group, it may well be the work of an apprentice from the same workshop. of particular interest are head of a girl and head of a man, circa 1510, in the Victoria & albert museum, London, both attributed to gregor Erhart.
