France, 1913

A fine early 20th century neo classical console table, the D shaped Breche d'Alep marble top above a fluted frieze with paterae and acanthus ornament, the fluted tapering legs joined by a X stretcher with a central urn.

Dated 1913, stamped twice, ”Charles Bernel / Paris / 1913” with fleur-de-lys, and with partially torn Bernel printed paper label to back.

Charles Bernel was a one of a few highly skilled cabinet makers producing furniture in the manner of earlier styles at the turn of the century.

Among his high calibre contemporaries were Paul Somani, Henry Dasson and Francois Linke, who are all noted for their quality of output. Among Bernel’s esteemed clientele was Queen Mary, who owned a gilt bronze mounted firescreen, recently sold at Christies 14th July 2006
