Domenico Brandi (Naples 1683 - 1736)
Shepherds with herds in a landscape
oil on canvas
Dimensions (cm): 41 x 58
With frame 51,5 x 68,5
The canvas, painted between the 17th and 18th centuries, shows a close affinity with the creations of Domenico Brandi.
Formed in the paternal shop in Naples, initially Brandi looks at the Parthenopean tradition, especially Gargiulo's. Later, he embarked on a trip to Rome where he worked in the shop of Philipp Peter Ross, Rosa da Tivoli. For his theme, his paintings remain anchored to Ross's repertoire, with which he is often confused.
With particular attention to our canvas and considering the exquisite finishing of the illustrated figures (compared to the landscape which appears to be almost sketched), we propose to enclose it in its series of preparatory drawings made in the perspective of a definitive canvas.
This pictorial solution particularly emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the painting.
The painting is in good condition, still in the front and has not undergone any restoration.
