In the great family of kilims of southeastern Anatolia, a preponderant place is occupied by a group of pieces known as Reyhanli. We mean the kilims coming from the village of Reyhanli, near Antakya, the very ancient Antioch, a few miles from the present Syrian border; Which is why we found many in the vicinity of Aleppo. This type of Kilim still enjoys a great reputation among collectors and merchants, due to its finesse and precision of execution.
No kilim Reyhanli dates back to the mid-19th century.
These pieces have a strictly symmetrical appearance and a drawing of great clarity. These characteristics are explained by the fact that they were woven to order for domestic use in urban houses of the well-to-do class. They served as curtains and doors, their decoration closely following that of the carved wooden doors of the Middle East.
Reyanli kilims are narrow, long and woven into two halves.
Its interesting pattern repertory shows this very colorful kilim to almost all known types of Turkish kilims of Central Anatolia.
