16th ceentury Brussel - Vertumne and Pomone

The Tenture of Vertumne and Pomone is one of the oldest and most important that has come out of the manufacture of Brussels. Comprising nine pieces, it was woven in wool, silk and gold, in the middle of the 16th century, for the Emperor Charles V. Vertumne is the god of the seasons, which is originally depicted as a stylized maple trunk. Of Etruscan origin, according to Propertius, it would come from Volsinil and would have been adopted by the Romans after the destruction of this city. In Rome, his statue rose from the Forum, in the Etruscan quarter. He embodied the change, according to legend, the gift of taking all the forms he wished. He fell in love with the nymph Pomona, a Roman deity who watched over the fruit and the gardens. And to whom was dedicated a sacred wood, the Pomonal, on the road leading from Rome to Ostia. A flamma was in charge of his worship. Some poets say that the legendary king Picus, married her, after pushing Circe out of love for her, which earned her to be transformed into a green peak. Ovide married Vertumne, the latter used the gift of metamorphosing that he had, in order to achieve his ends. It is seen to be transformed successively: as a reaper, as a harvester, as a farmer, as a fruit-gatherer, as a soldier, and as a sinner. The tapestry of Vertumne and Pomone is the opportunity to show the talent of the weavers to recreate these gardens of wool and silk. Exceptional tapestry of Manufacture of Brussels woven around 1600, probably from a cardboard of Jan Cornelis Vermeyen, son and pupil of Cornelis Vermeyen, this painter born near Harrlem, towards 1500 and died in Brussels in 1559, was very imbued with mythology Roman.
