Wilhelm Gimmi was born on 7 August 1886 in Zurich. Thanks to a scholarship, he settled in Paris, where he stayed for more than thirty years. He spent three years at the Julian Academy and made numerous visits to the Louvre. During one of his stays in Switzerland, Wilhelm Gimmi founded the "Moderner Bund" with Klee, Arp and a few others. In 1911, he moved in front of some Italian frescoes, then travels to Belgium and Holland.
From 1911 to 1940, Wilhelm Gimmi lives and works in Paris. He attended the Académie de la Palette and met his first successes in 1919. In 1920, Wilhelm Gimmi became a member of the Salon d'Automne and took part in the Salon des Indépendants. He settled in Chexbres in 1940.
