Silver ewer with bowl by Edme Gelez. Circa 1809-1819

Silver ewer with a Cupid-shaped handle and accompanying bowl. The striking, high handle in the shape of a winged Cupid attaches to the pitcher at the paunch with an angel’s head. The rim of the ewer is adorned with water-leaf, and the underside of the spout features a bearded man. A wide frieze with alternating Cupids and flowering foliage on a matte background decorates the paunch. The base of the pitcher is embellished with a frieze of reeds and cattails. The bowl is decorated with a frieze of reeds, cattails, and vines in medallions. Bearded and crowned heads also adorn the basin, a recurring decorative pattern during the First Empire.
