Elisabeth-Charlotte de Bavière, Princesse Palatine, duchesse d’Orléans (1652- 1722), Nicolas de Largillière, oil on canvas, circa 1690-1700. Measurements (L x H). 55 x 42 in.
Dressed in a fanciful Roman costume, a busty woman with long hair poses before an enigmatic landscape. Facing frontally, she twists his torso in order to put her hand on a watering vase. She is a famous member of the French royal family: « La Palatine ».
Nicolas de Largillière positioned her figure before an atmospheric landscape and used a fluent brushwork, rich autumnal colours, and an exquisite treatment of draperies. All these characteristics betray his training in a Flemish late Baroque style heavily indebted to Anthony van Dyck.
