Joseph BORDES, marquess de Batailler d’Omonville, 1815, miniature portrait

19th Century portrait miniature on ivory,
oval, 7,8 x 6,4 cm
Signed and dated lower right: Bordes / 1815
Identified on the reverse side.
Provenance : collection Adélaïde Eugénie de Batailler d'Omonville, countess of Sheldon; probably coll. Blanche Marie Adèle de Sheldon (1838-1899).

Jean-Baptiste-Pierre-Bernard d'Omonville was born on 13th September 1790. He had at least one daughter, Adelaîde Eugenie who maried in 1835 Alfred Jean Armand, count of Sheldon ; they had one daugher Blanche Marie Adèle de Sheldon (1838-1899). The name Sheldon is mentioned on the reverse.
Under the restauration of Monarchy, after 1815, the estate of Omonville, located in Normandy near Rouen, was sold by the family to Mr Ledier, deputy and mayor of Bacqueville-en-Caux.

Joseph Bordes studied in Toulouse, came to Paris during the Empire and was a pupil of JB Isabey. He exhibited at the Paris Saalon 1808-1835 and worked in Paris, and elsewhere in France, for example Lyon and Rouen.
