Silver-Gilt Chalice, Rome circa 1740

Very fine chalice decorated with the "Arma Christi", the Instruments of the Passion : dice, tunic, Holy Lance , Holy Sponge and the column where Jesus was whipped in the Flagellation of Christ are represented in various cartridges.

It presents the punches of the Papal States of Rome: the keys of heaven and the goldsmith hallmark of Nepoti Giuseppe or Domenico Gabriele Marrani.
These both Roman silversmiths marked their works with a punch representing three stars. (See directory of Italian goldsmith punches: "Argenti Italiani del Settecento" of Donaver & Dabbene, ed Libreria Malavan 2000 punches No. 1874 and 1824).
