Rest of the Holy Family with the young Saint John the Baptist in a classical landscape
Pierre Le Sueur (born in Paris in 1786, died in Bordeaux)
Oil on canvas 100 cm by 75 cm
Superb giltwood frame
This biblical subject is the episode where the Flight into Egypt, the Holy Family made a halt, and as you have noticed the landscape is not Egyptian! European painters who had never traveled far, painted this scene in their everyday environment.
We have little information about the painter Pierre Le Sueur, we do not know his date of birth, we know he was born in Paris and died in Bordeaux in 1786.
Great-nephew of the great Eustache Le Sueur (1617-1655), he was received Academician in 1747.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon (Youth exhibition and Royal Academy between 1734 and 1753).
Very few paintings by Pierre Le Sueur came down to us making each discovery an event. This talented painter remains to be discovered and we are happy to contribute to it
