André Louis Gilbert (1746-1809) received master in Paris July 20, 1774, is a great cabinetmaker of Louis XVI.
The majority of its production is highlighted by frames in amaranth veneer and consists of two distinct groups: the ancient ruins of inlays or veneers satin, combined with an ornamentation of exceptional quality bronzes.
Marrying the ideas of the revolution, he joined the civil service and cabinet making stops around 1790.
Our opinion:
Our pair of corners is the purest Louis XVI style fashionable in Paris in 1785, that of Risener, Topino RVLC ...
From simple but so powerful form, with a choice of fine wood and ebony particularly subtle contrasts / Bronze, Satin / Maple ... our sports a pair of allegorical bronze decor qualities chasing and gilding near-perfect.
These falls to "scientific objects" are rare and have been used by Gilbert has few times.
The mirror and the snake represents wisdom and prudence that can only be achieved through knowledge (globe, square, books ....)
Very fashionable under Louis XVI, we find these allegories in the letterhead of the Executive Management Board or on the backs of the chairs of the Senate.
It is not impossible that this is a special order of a great servant of the time.
