Paintings, sculptures and art objects from the 15th to the 17th century
Rare triptych by Bartheolomeus Bruyn the younger and his workshop. Around 1570.
With its period frame, the work is composed of three panels painted on oak.
In the center a crucifiction with the virgin Saint Jean Batiste and Mary Magdalene. The donor is represented on his knees in prayer, richly dressed in a pelisse.
Against a backdrop of a typical Renaissance landscape of buildings and mountains.
A phylactery and a banner relate the gospels according to Saint John and Saint Luke.
The right panel represents the female family of the donor under the protection of Saint Marguerite (Marthe) mastering the tarasque. Composed of 5 characters with their coats of arms.
The left panel is under the protection of Saint Anthony, the 4 male figures also have their coat of arms.
Batholomaeus Bruyn born in Cologne around 1530, son and student of Bruyn the Elder, was a renowned portrait painter.
Very active German painter, notably in the cloister of the Carmelites of Cologne where he painted 57 scenes in collaboration with his father.
He inherited the family workshop in 1555 and at the same time he was very active in the affairs of the city of Cologne.
Following vision problems, his activity stopped in 1590.
He died around 1607.
Our painting was purchased from Bresset père in Paris.
