Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1597 - Rome 1669) circle of
Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane with Two Angels
Oil on canvas
80 x 61 cm, in frame 98 x 77 cm.
This pleasant painting, depicting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and comforted by two angels, can be assigned to the school of Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1597 - Rome 1669).
The work interprets an episode included in the New Testament, in which Jesus, at the end of the Last Supper with his apostles, withdraws in prayer to the Garden of Gethsemane, an estate located on the Mount of Olives, outside the walls of the Holy City of Jerusalem.
The composition focuses on the figures of Christ, represented kneeling with outstretched arms in a gesture of acceptance of the imminent sacrifice, with two angels: one supports him while the other, in flight, displays the chalice and cross, alluding to the Passion.
The brilliance of the execution is rendered through the use of vivid and bright colours.
The stylistic features of the painting show that it belongs to the Roman figurative culture of the height of the 17th century, distinct from that varied and international artistic environment, from which an expressive gracefulness typical of the Roman Baroque stands out.
In the detail, the juxtaposition of the numerous figures, especially the figure of the angel, in flight produced by Pietro da Cortona, one of the interpreters of the Baroque school, whose flourishing workshop was able to provide, without exaggeration, a spectacular and pompous style.
The theme of the angel is frequent in the author, who intends in this way to reinforce their presence as guardians of our salvation. Our author must certainly have seen and drawn inspiration from Cortona's models, from the monumental altarpieces and frescoes, always studded with angels, that Cortona painted on numerous occasions, for example see: 'Angels with Symbols of the Passion' (Church S. Maria in Vallicella, Rome imm1), and the 'Holy Family with Angels' (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, imm2).
The work's condition is very good, restored.
19th century gold frame, in good condition.
The painting is sold with a certificate of authenticity and descriptive iconographic card.
