Red chalk Old Master Sketch of a Battle Scene after Maarten van Heemskerck

Follower of Maarten van Heemskerck
Netherlands; ca. 1600
Red chalk on laid paper; wood framed with burgundy velvet matte

Approximate size: 6.5 x 10 in. (drawing); 12 x 15 in. (with frame)

The present sketch copies a 1556 engraving of a battle scene from the series: The victories of Charles V, executed by Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert after original designs by Maarten van Heemskerck. It is presumed the series was realized with the intent to inspire the emperor’s son and heir, Philip II of Spain, to continue the legacy of his father.

The series of prints were greatly received and were reprinted on seven independent occasions between 1556-to-1640. It is presumed the present sketch was probably conceived sometime within this timeframe, perhaps ca. 1600 or later.

Features numbering in pen and brown ink on the verso with the collection number: 41 20.
