The council of the gods
Oil on canvas
58 x 73 cm. - In frame 77 x 90 cm.
A majestic cloud towering over a fortified city, on which the principal Olympian deities are reclining, gathered around the grade Zeus: this is the subject of the fascinating canvas on offer, a pleasing example of the northern Italian school, dating from the second half of the 16th to the early 17th century.
A particular aspect of the canvas is that in the upper part, on the left, we see portrayed the figures of the donors, with their hands clasped as they observe the council of deities, above the foreshortened landscape, presumably their place of origin.
Interesting is the depiction of the deities, represented with their own symbol, from the left Mars, god of war, with a lion, Apollo, god of the arts with the lyre, Venus with the little Cupid, Poseidon, ruler of the seas, with the Trident, Then Jupiter, the king of the gods, with eagle and thunderbolt, Diana goddess of the hunt with moon on her head, Janus depicted with two faces, as the god can look into the future and the past, Juno queen of the gods with peacock, Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, with helmet and spear.
?The work shows the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic connotations, as well as the quality of execution, of the production of the Veneto area between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and inflections that evoke the name of Paolo Caliali, contaminated by strong Flemish reminiscences.
The work is offered in good condition, complete with a pleasing antique wooden frame, and has an old professionally executed rintelo.
