Venetian vedutism of the eighteenth century
Francesco Tironi (Venice, about 1745 - 1797) entourage of
View of Venice with the Piazza di San Marco
Second half of the eighteenth century
oil painting on canvas
cm. 81 x 112, with frame cm. 95 x 126
The canvas, a view of Venice with the monumental Piazza di San Marco, one of the most evocative and pictorial most appreciated views of the lagoon city, should be compared to the hand of a Venetian author active in the full eighteenth century, from the entourage of the landscape painter Francesco Tironi (Venice, 1745 -1797).
This reference is endorsed by the comparison with the painter's certain works, for the analogous way of setting the scenes, in the common tendency in the rendering of perspective, for the attention to detail of the architectures punctually drawn, for the marked play of lights and shadows and for the typology of the numerous Canaletto-style figures, which animate the scene.
The eighteenth-century for Venice, in the artistic and cultural field, is a second "golden age" and the genre of the city view became a genre appreciated and extremely requested by the great prolific big names of Vedutism, to satisfy the needs of patrician families, of nobles, mainly English and Germans, but also French, who visited the city during their “Voyage d'Italie”.
Tironi is certainly one of the excellences of this pictorial field, with a rich group of collaborators active in his workshop in the lagoon city. Well executed and rich in details and characters, our canvas is a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice portrayed from one of the most famous and extraordinary views of the city.
The view, in excellent condition, intact and without significant restorations, not recently relined, is enriched by a beautiful gilded frame, not coeval.
