Pair of large mercury gilt bronze candlesticks or flambeaux in matte and gloss, Empire period - early 19th century, circa 1810. High-quality Parisian work, similar to that of Thomire.
The base is richly decorated with palmettes, the shaft is a quiver with flaming torches, and the basket is wickerwork. They are made up of 8 independent parts (a sign of the model's quality), all in matte and bright mercury-gilded bronze (bronze only, no brass parts). We haven't been able to find this exact model in our books, but the high quality of these candlesticks means that they can be linked to the productions of the greatest bronziers of the time. We have also found basketry motifs on some of Thomire's candlesticks and sconces, making this hypothesis very likely.
Thomire was one of the most outstanding bronziers of his generation, renowned for his production of bronze furniture under the Ancien Régime. Under the Empire, he raised this craft to its highest level of quality, while at the same time creating in the early years of the 19th century an industrial company with European influence. He retired in 1823, to be succeeded by his sons.
A fine collector's item, these candlesticks are of the highest quality and worthy of imperial furniture.
Very good condition: no dents or deformations. Original mercury gilding well preserved.
