Stormy Sea With Sailing Ship - workshop of, Salvator Rosa (1615 - 1673)

Stormy marina with sailing ship and perched fortress - Salvator Rosa (Naples 1615 - 1673 Rome) workshop of
oil on canvas (87 x 116 cm, with frame 98 x 127 cm)

This suggestive coastal view is referable to the production of the workshop of Salvator Rosa, a painter famous as a romantic and rebellious, active between Naples, Florence and Rome: the impending rocky wall, the impetuous sea, the storm clouds give everything a sublime nuance that is fully part of the Neapolitan artist's production of landscapes and seascapes.

To be counted among the most interesting landscape painters of the Roman artistic panorama of the Baroque age, his production boasts stormy scenographies, nocturnal and fantastic views, which differ considerably from the Arcadian taste of the time, and highlighting a great pictorial originality.

The canvas is part of that thematic vein that met with great success during the seventeenth century because the pleasure of observing the power of the sea was highly appreciated, as it was highly decorative and suitable to arouse the astonishment of the observer.

Salvator Rosa devoted himself to this type of views in a particular phase of his career, and precisely between his Florentine period and the early years of his return to Rome when - around 1650 - he abandoned pure classicism to introduce a picturesque vision of reality that emerges to break and animate the '' ideal '' scheme.

In fact, a series of canvases that are stylistically comparable with the work in question belong to this period, which metaphorically address the romantic theme of inner restlessness relating it to the vision of the landscape. In fact, nature appears restless and animated, amidst sparkling lights, black shadows and large touches of color, while retaining an accent of solemn beauty.

We can relate the work to our work is the Tempest of Palazzo Franchini (https://catalogo.beniculturali.it/detail/HistoricOrArtisticProperty/0500335980).

As in our case, an elegant sailing ship, with its sails swollen by the force of the wind, is caught by the storm while it is near a high cliff on which an ancient tower stands. We see the skilful use of pictorial material and light tones, spread with quick touches to convey a lively effect of movement, creating a truly shocking illusion of waves being dragged to break against the rocks.
