Spain; late 17th century
Giltwood
Approximate size: 58 x 9 x 6.5 cm
The present pair of late 17th century Spanish Baroque giltwood columns may have once formed part of an altarpiece environment. The feature of such columns flanking altarpieces during the Renaissance and Baroque era have its inspiration in the biblical narrative concerning the columns erected at the Temple of Jerusalem during the reign of King Solomon. The decorative feature of vines and grape bunches on the present columns are likely intended to allude to the blood of Christ.
The spiraling columns are set upon Classically inspired plinths and are surmounted by a decorative capital depicting floral motifs on each of its sides.
Condition: Minor chips along some edges. Overall condition is commensurate with age.
