Magnificent and imposing figurative group in patinated bronze.
The goddess of the hunt is represented standing, slightly leaning, her bow and quiver placed at her side, while she educates her dog who faithfully rests its muzzle on her leg.
The carving is of fine quality with exquisite attention to detail; it has a wonderful original dark patina. It is signed "A. Carrier-Belleuse".
Carrier-Belleuse received training as a goldsmith when he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1840 and continued his studies in decorative arts at the Petite Ecole. He worked in London between 1850 and 1855 and from 1857 began to exhibit at the Salon. During this time Napoleon III offered him numerous commissions during the reconstruction of Paris. His sculpture encompasses a range of artistic movements and influences, such as Rococo, Neo-Baroque, Realism and Naturalism. The students who trained under him in his studio included many big names, such as August Rodin.
