Faenza maiolica trompe l’oeil footed dish
Faenza, 17th century
Faience, fine glazed pottery
diameter : 24 cm ; High : 8cm
Rare footed dish, the upper side filled with naturalistically-modelled almonds and painted border.
This plate is a remarkable example of the surprises that could be found on certain tables in high social circles.
The superb jattes in the shape of olives, pears, almonds, apricots, apples and figs were aimed to please, distract and surprise the guests.
Many earthenware factories, including Moustier, Sceaux, Faenza, Alcora produced those dishes and bowls and they are today exposed in different museums (museum of tableware in Garonne, Musée des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, Sèvres city of ceramics, Museum of Creil).
