Plate « trompe-l’Oeil » presenting a dish of apricots - Nevers, XVIII siècl

Plate « trompe-l’Oeil » presenting a dish of apricots
Nevers, 18th century
Faience, fine glazed pottery

Rare earthenware bowl decorated with naturalistically-modelled trompe-l'oeil apricots.

This plate is a remarkable example of the surprises that could be found on certain tables in high social circles.
The superb jattes in the shape of olives, pears, almonds, apricots, apples and figs were aimed to please, distract and surprise the guests.
Many earthenware factories, including Moustier, Sceaux, Faenza, Alcora produced those dishes and bowls and they are today exposed in different museums (museum of tableware in Garonne, Musée des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, Sèvres city of ceramics, Museum of Creil).
