Plate « trompe-l’Oeil » presenting a dish of plums

Faience, fine glazed pottery
18th century

Round dish with relief decoration trompe l’oeil of plums, decorated border with bouquets.

This very realistic plate is a remarkable example of the surprises that could be found on certain tables in high social circles.
The superb jattes in the shape of olives, pears, almonds, apricots, apples and figs were aimed to please, distract and surprise the guests.
Many earthenware factories, including Moustier, Sceaux, Faenza, Alcora produced those dishes and bowls and they are today exposed in different museums (museum of tableware in Garonne, Musée des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, Sèvres city of ceramics, Museum of Creil).
