Signed and dated lower right: "B. De Loose F. 1838"
In this painting we can see a family in their kitchen. The youngest child is standing on the table, she might be taking her first steps. The little brother of the child is curiously looking at his sibling, while he holding his children's instrument.
Basile de Loose was a Belgian painter. His portraits and genre pieces that often glorify happy family life are. De Loose is the most important representative of the Biedermeier feeling in the Low Countries. His performances, sometimes dismissed as soppy, rise above the work of his contemporaries through their humor and technical virtuosity.
