Haute epoque, design
Two characters, still life with rich game and vegetables, crockery, a dog and a cat.
Northern Italy, 17th century
dimensions: 155 x 185 cm
174 x 205 cm (with frame)
In the center of a large kitchen, on a neutral table, various birds are placed, the result of a rich hunting trip; including pheasants, ducks, woodcocks, some partridges and a splendid hare.
On the right side two characters: a man in a black tunic, gray hair and headgear, holds the hare in his left hand, and with his right hand slips the knife from his belt; next to him a young man with a sling in his hand looks at us and points to the man next to him, probably to make us understand that he is the hunter of the game.
At the bottom left a dog, and above it, behind a basket containing vegetables, a suspicious cat peeps out.
On the back wall various copper cookware, three large pewter dishes and a terracotta container with lid.
Worth noting is the window at the top right, from which you can see a cross-section of the bright day outside.
And above all the table in the foreground, on which some spring onions and a wooden container full of vegetables are placed, some of which leaves have come out, and two of these were caught by the artist when they fell to the ground… in an almost "photo" of the moment.
The painting is part of that production of "genre scenes" which developed in the area between Lombardy and Emilia Romagna between the 17th and 18th centuries where a circle of painters, including Giacomo Ceruti, Felice Boselli, Giacomo Francesco Cipper known as “il Todeschini, Giovanni and Angelo Maria Crivelli, Bartolomeo Arbotori, Monsù Aurora, Gian Domenico Valentino. they created paintings where the representation of everyday life was often the main subject.
The painting is in excellent condition.
